The following are just some of the beginner’s techniques that can be taken as one-off workshops or combined to form a course that will help the attendee to start their own patchwork quilt. Groundworks Studios can supply some scraps of fabric but additional fabric can be purchased as required at a cost of 2-3 Euro per ¼ yard (known as ‘Fat Quarters’).
- Piecing over papers (also known as English piecing)
- Strip-piecing (learning to use a rotary cutter, acrylic ruler and cutting mat for quick piecing)
- Log-cabin
- Machine appliqué
- Hand-appliqué
- Hand-piecing using templates to cut the pieces
- ½ square triangles
- Layering the quilt (each quilt has 3 layers, pieced top, wadding and backing)
- Quilting the quilt (stitching through all 3 layers by hand or machine)
- Binding the quilt (raw edges of the 3 layers are neatened and finished by adding a binding)
